  Origins of Samhain
The Celtic calendar ended on Nov.1st. Oct.31st was their New Year's eve.
Samhain (sow-in) comes from the name of the lord of the dead. The Lord of death gathered the souls of the dead and decided which forms they were to take on in the comming year.

The Jack~O~lantern:
People who roamed on this night imitating fairies would carry turnips carved to represent faces. This is the origin of our modern jack-o-lantern.
It was also said that people would leave candles in their windows and yards to light the way of their dearly departed so their souls could find their way on this night.

Halloween History
The American tradition of trick~or~treat dates back to the early All Souls' Day parades in England. During these festivites, poor citizens would beg for food. Families would give them "soul cakes" in return for their promise to pray for the family's dead relatives. This was also called "going~a~souling." This tradition was eventually taken up by children who would visit the houses in their neighborhood & be given ale, food, and money.

By the 1920's and 30's, Halloween had become a secular, but community-centered holiday, with parades & town parties.

Today, Americans spend .5 billion annually on Halloween, making it the country's second largest commercial holiday.
